Ezechial Thurman combines his passion for teaching children music with media production, music technology, music composition and song writing, in order to inspire urban public school children and youth to engage in the creative process in order to promote anti-racism, conflict-resolution and character development through music. With over 15 years of teaching experience, he is currently elementary music and music technology teacher at Henry H. Houston School (K-8) in the West Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, PA. In addition to directing the school’s vocal music program, he is the founder and producer of Rural Lane Records, a school-based, student-run digital recording studio and record company. Working out of a 30 seat Korg Soundtree music technology and media production lab, his students create music compositions, recordings, podcasts, music videos and short films that focus on affecting positive social change. While at Houston School, he has launched a school YouTube channel and published two full-length CD albums including the highly acclaimed “Houston School Anti-Bullying CD Project” funded in part by a Picasso Project grant. A third CD album titled “A Day In My Life—2016 – 2026” is currently underway in partnership with LiveConnections.org (World Café Live) and will be released in mid-2016. This CD album will feature Houston students with guest artists from the Philadelphia Orchestra and other well-known recording artists from the Philadelphia region. Thurman is the recipient of multiple awards and grants from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Mt. Airy Teacher Fund, and Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth. In addition to his role as a music educator, Thurman has served as a worship leader at Harvest Time Christian Fellowship Church in Philadelphia for over 12 years.

Why I Teach at Eastern

It is an honor for me to teach at Eastern University in order to help train and mentor the next generation of music teachers and Christian leaders.

Research or Performance Interests

As a Worship Leader, I am especially interested in studying the Biblical role of music in the local church setting. For more than 20 years, I have dedicated my professional music life to serving as a minister of music reflecting my personal belief that music’s highest function is to bring glory and honor to God.
