Dr. Peterson grew up in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Oklahoma, which he says is a beautiful place once you learn to appreciate different shades of brown. After an illness rendered him a paraplegic at age 18, he lived at home while attending Bethany Nazarene College (Bethany, Oklahoma), where he majored in history and studied New Testament Greek. He earned an M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in New Testament at Duke University, where he wrote a dissertation on the Gospel of Mark, later published as The Origins of Mark: The Markan Community in Current Debate.

Dr. Peterson joined the faculty of Eastern University in 1998, where he taught introductory and upper-level courses in biblical studies and Greek. He also co-taught a class on Christian Marriage with his wife and faculty colleague, Margaret Kim Peterson, also known as “the other Dr. Peterson.” In the eleven times this course was offered it served over seven hundred students, to all of whom both Dr. Petersons listened closely. These conversations became the basis of their co-authored book, Are You Waiting for “The One”? Cultivating Realistic, Positive Expectations for Christian Marriage.

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Peterson served for a number of years as Chair of the Department of Theology and as Moderator of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Peterson’s health began to decline as he developed complications of paraplegia. He retired from teaching at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year, and entered hospice care (at home) in July of 2012. He was visited faithfully by Eastern administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni until his death in March 2016. Dwight's witness continues through films made by Travis Reed of The Work of the People.
