Valerie Flower

Theatre Program Director & Professor of Theatre


Valerie Flower is an award-winning theatre artist and educator. Her professional credentials include a Tufts University Ph.D. and publications in arts education. She shapes exceptional productions from Shakespeare to devised works proven by two Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival awards for meritorious direction. Valerie is the recipient of The Justice Award, presented annually by the Pennsylvania Initiative to End the Death Penalty, for her commitment to blending theatre and socia justice. Her one-woman-show, Between Two Chairs, blends Christian faith with Alzheimer’s research, and was developed through a grant from the Lilly Endowment with Touchstone Theatre Ensemble. Valerie’s collaborative style was most recently featured in her original work, Stripping The Yellow Wallpaper, a part of the 2019 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Dr. Flower, as she is known by her students in North Philadelphia, brings theatre to children living in deep poverty through collaborations with a variety of arts organizations including The Philadelphia Young Playwrights and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Valerie is the proud mother of Jude, a college sophomore, and lives with her husband in Philadelphia.
