Dr. Calenthia Dowdy Awarded 2016 Women’s Way Powerful Voice Award

St. Davids, PA, May 18, 2016: Earlier this month, Eastern University Youth Ministry professor, Dr. Calenthia Dowdy, was recognized by local nonprofit, Women’s Way, at the 39th Annual Powerful Voice Awards. Dr. Dowdy was officially recognized on Tuesday, May 3 at the Sheraton Center City by NBC News anchor, Tracy Davidson, for her work in the community as an advocate for change among young women through local nonprofit organization, Philly FIGHT.

Dr. Dowdy states that she was “humbled and honored to represent women's voices” through this recognition. Also among the award recipients were Monica Harmon of the University of Pennsylvania and WHYY’s Marty Moss-Coane, who won the national Lucretia Mott Award. The annual awards dinner is meant to support and honor women who make a positive and visionary impact in the Philadelphia community and throughout the country. The event’s website had this to say of the honorees: “Calenthia Dowdy of Philly FIGHT, and Monica Harmon, of UPenn Nursing and Nurse Family Partnership, embody the local activism, dedication, and inspiration of our community, and especially are representative of our mission statement. Both women have spent their lives serving the Philly community, and have enacted tangible change and progress in the process.”

Women’s Way is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that has sought to engage and give a voice to local women for over 38 years. Through grantmaking, public education and advocacy initiatives the organization responds directly to community needs and attempts to better understand and tackle the challenges facing women on a regular basis. According to their website, “ Women’s Way has courageously taken positions on cutting-edge issues relating to women and girls. Our work has been uniquely strategic and effective – engaging and convening people from all walks of life to create a truly collective and Powerful Voice for Women.”
