Courtney Heath, Intern at the Please Touch Museum

I am currently the literacy intern at the Please Touch Museum, and I am having a great time. This position at the museum gives me a range of duties from working directly with children and doing behind the scenes program work. A large majority of my work involves organizing and cataloguing current, new, and donated books in the library, as well as choosing specific books to go along with different programs that are implemented throughout the museum. In addition, I do quite a bit of children's books research, since the museum wishes to expand its library. I also help with different events at the museum, such as meet & greets with book characters, as well as helping foster creativity in children in the Program Room. In the future, I will be assisting the literacy coordinator with the annual Please Touch Museum Book Awards.

This internship is an invaluable experience for me. I have learned so much about the inner workings of a museum, as well as effective programs to foster learning for young children. This is the perfect internship for me because I love books (after all, I am an English Lit major!), and I have a passion for working with children and non-profit organizations. I am not an education major, but I love working with kids, and this internship gives me experience in a professional setting that is not a classroom. It also gives me the satisfaction that I am making a difference in the lives of children. After I graduate, I hope to have a career at an organization that has children’s literacy at its core.
