Process of Internship for the Communication Studies Department

The Communication Studies Internship Program at Eastern seeks to provide students with out-of-the-classroom experiences that enhance their classroom knowledge. These internships foster mutually beneficial relationships between Eastern students and regional businesses and organizations. Eastern's unique internship program is well regarded by students for meaningful, practical experiences and by employers for the quality of students enrolled.

The Internship Program assists our communication studies students with gaining an edge in the workplace. An internship (2 credits minimum) is required for all Communication Studies majors. Communication Studies majors and minors may earn up to 6 internship credits while attending Eastern, based on time worked at the internship. The entire internship process is managed by Assistant Professor, Susannah McMonagle, who serves as a liaison between the students and the community, and helps students with the internship search, application process, interviewing, and solidifying a rewarding internship experience. In tandem with the internship, students participate in an Internship class (COM495), offered every semester, that synthesizes learnings from both their internship and major coursework.

The Center for Career Development is another resource to learn more about internship opportunities at Eastern.

“The communication studies major at Eastern prepared me for a full-time job in my field almost immediately after graduating. Through hands-on assignments in classes and my internship, it prepared me to excel in my current field of nonprofit communications. Apart from the practical aspects of the major, my study of interpersonal relationships and communication theory has also given me an exceptional understanding of human communication that I benefit from both in my professional and personal life.”
