Pre-Med Club

If Pre-Med students can be any major, how do you find other Pre-Med students?

You are encouraged to join the Eastern University Health and Medical Club, which meets twice monthly (usually Mondays at 10 AM in McInnis 312). The student president and the faculty advisor (Dr. Maria Fichera) work together to provide Pre-Med students with many enriching opportunities. The club visits local medical schools in the area to attend their open houses, and invites guest speakers to campus to talk about such issues as balancing career and personal life, medical ethics, and opportunities for medical missionaries. Furthermore, the club provides the opportunity for students to discuss questions about the MCAT, science courses and the application process. All Eastern University students interested in medical, veterinary, and dental schools as well as other careers in the health professions or sciences are invited to join the Eastern University Health and Medical Club.

Earthkeepers Club

Earthkeepers is a group of Eastern University students devoted to promoting proper stewardship of God's creation through education and service. They believe they are called to answer and fulfill a mandate handed down to us by God: to live as loving and responsible stewards of the earth and to work toward the health and harmony of creation. This student-run group is focused on promoting service opportunities on Eastern’s campus. Some of these service opportunities include campus work-days, restoration of natural areas on campus, improving walking trails, and building and caring for the on-campus garden. Members of Earthkeepers, in partnership with SIFE, have secured donations for the majority of supplies need to build the raised-bed garden that is located near the greenhouse on Eastern’s St. Davids campus. In coming semesters, students will have the opportunity to work in the garden, benefit from fresh produce grown on campus, and perhaps be supported by garden internships.

Earthkeepers have a strong partnership with the Natural Areas Committee and Interns on campus and frequently work with them for campus work days. Additionally, members of Earthkeepers have attended Renewal Summits and other Christian-minded environmental meetings. Aside from their work on campus, Earthkeepers also plan at least one camping trip a year for the members of the group. Other projects that Earthkeepers have worked with include building bird and bat houses and putting them on campus, bringing guest speakers to campus, organizing prayer events, educating other students about environmental concerns, and participating in Homecoming events. Currently, they are focusing on the garden construction and examining the feasibility for adding an apiary to Eastern’s St. Davids campus.

Summer Internship Program with "Philly Futures" High School Seniors

For over ten years, the Eastern University Biology Department and current Biology majors have partnered with Philadelphia Futures to provide an intensive environmental science internship program each summer.  This opportunity is offered to 25 rising high school seniors from Philadelphia, who participate in the Philadelphia Futures Sponsor-A-Scholar program.  The internship runs for three days a week, over a period of four weeks in July.  Students explore environmental science through field work at the Gulph Creek Watershed and hands on research and lab work at the Eastern University campus in St. Davids under the direction of Dr. Ben Dube.  The program culminates with students presenting scientific research reports to their peers.

The Eastern Philly Futures summer program provides high school students with valuable research skills and laboratory experience, which can help determine if a future major in Biology is something they want to pursue.  It also exposes students to the college environment in a relaxed atmosphere.  The summer program is fully funded through Philadelphia Futures.  Eastern University science majors can assist Dr. Dube as teacher’s assistants in the lab for a small stipend.  To find out more about Philadelphia Futures see
