Reflecting On Sacrifice This Memorial Day

Each year, Memorial Day invites us to pause, amid picnics, parties, and the start of summer, to remember and reflect. At its heart, this day is not about celebration, but about reverence. It is a solemn reminder of those who died  to preserve our freedom.

On this Memorial Day, we honor those who gave everything for the sake of others. As we remember their sacrifice, we also lift up the families who carry their legacy with quiet strength and enduring sorrow. We read in Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” May God’s nearness bring them comfort and peace.

In a world that often moves quickly past grief, let us choose to linger in remembrance. Reflect on the stories of those who served courageously by reading of their heroism, engaging in community service, or having meaningful conversations. Offer a prayer for families who carry the ache of loss, and take a moment to simply be still and grateful for their sacrifice and for the peace we find in our faith.

We are especially mindful of those in our own Eastern community—students, alumni, faculty, and staff—who have served or whose loved ones have. Your service and your stories are part of the fabric of our community. We honor you, we thank you, and we remember with you.
