St. Davids, PA: The Social Work department of Eastern University will host a full day conference March 31, 2017 on Social Work with Latino Communities at Esperanza College of Eastern University at 4261 N. 5th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140. The conference is presented by the Latino Social Workers Organization (LSWO). This year’s focus will be on the La Familia Perspective.
The La Familia Perspective is a specialized training program created in the early 2000s by the LSWO to help to educate social workers on an effective, culturally responsive approach to working with Latino communities. Its job is to better prepare those who are working in human services to help increase the cultural competency with Latinos.
The Latino Social Work Organization is a group that was founded to help attract and retain Latinos in the field of social work. It does this through various summits, conferences, workshops and programs that are designed to educate about social work in Latino communities.
Throughout this conference, the LSWO will look to review the NASW Code of Ethics and Cultural Competency Standards, challenge attendees to look at their own cultural responses towards Latinos, integrate strengths perspectives, cultural humility, ecological perspective, empowerment perspectives and other social work skills and provide social workers an opportunity to dialogue with other social workers.
Stephanie Perez-Jamul, MSW, Lecturer of Social Work at Eastern University said of the conference, “Eastern's BSW program is excited to host the Latino Social Work Organization at our Esperanza Campus for a day long conference on La Familia Perspective. Eastern began offering the full BSW program at Esperanza College in 2013. Most of our students not only complete their field placements in the area but many are later hired to work in the surrounding Latino community. It is imperative that social workers working with Latino Communities integrate cultural humility and ecological perspectives in their service delivery. Attendees will learn how to utilize an effective culturally responsive approach in working with Latino Communities. The cost for the day is $50 per person, $30 for Eastern Field Instructors and Affiliates with group rates available, $10 for non-Eastern students and free for Eastern students and faculty. Free parking is available in the Esperanza Campus parking lot located on 4th and Bristol (entrance on Bristol between 5th and 4th streets).
The Bachelor of Social Work at Eastern University’s Esperanza College is the first step towards a professional degree that enables one to work in a variety of social service agencies. The program allows students to experience two internships at agencies located throughout Philadelphia. These experiences provide students with practical experience and knowledge which prepares them to enter the field upon graduation.
