Eastern University Launches Men’s and Women’s Collegiate Rugby

St. Davids, PA — Eastern University is pleased to announce the launch of men’s and women’s collegiate rugby, expanding athletic opportunities while further enriching campus life and supporting the University’s commitment to holistic student development.

Both programs are expected to compete at the Division III level within the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) framework beginning in Spring 2027, while remaining active members of USA Rugby. The teams will operate as club sports with an elevated varsity-style experience, receiving comprehensive support services consistent with varsity student-athletes, including strength and conditioning, sports medicine, academic support, and access to athletics facilities.

This enhanced club model reflects Eastern’s commitment to broad-based participation and meaningful opportunities for student engagement.

“We are excited to expand our athletics offerings with the addition of men’s and women’s rugby. These programs enhance campus life, create new opportunities for student engagement, and align with our mission and values.”

Brian Bingaman, Athletics Director

As part of the program launch, Eastern University will begin an immediate national search for a Director of Rugby to lead both programs, establish a sustainable competitive model, and cultivate a culture aligned with the University’s values.

Through the addition of men’s and women’s rugby, Eastern continues to strengthen athletics as an extension of its mission as a diverse, Christ-centered university committed to faith, reason, and justice, preparing student-athletes to lead and serve both on and off the field.
