Eastern University Adds Computer Science as a BS Degree Program

ST. DAVIDS, PA - Eastern University is excited to announce a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science as the latest offering in the Mathematics Department. The program encourages students to unite together the exciting opportunities of mathematical problem solving with the computational power of the computer.

Mathematics Department Chair Dr. Walter Huddell said of the program, “What the telescope is to the astronomer, the computer is to the computer scientist. Like the telescope, the computer is a means by which new universes of interesting problems are revealed.”

The Computer Science curriculum is comprised of courses such as Data Structures, Databases, Programming Languages, Operating Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Analysis of Algorithms, and Ethical and Philosophical Issues in Computer and Data Science. Mathematical courses in Calculus, Discrete Mathematics and Linear Algebra are included as well. Students also have the option to combine their studies of Computer Science with majors in pure mathematics or data science.

As a Christian institution, Eastern University strives not only for academic excellence but an integration of faith and ethical behavior within its studies. Regarding the Computer Science curriculum, Dr. Huddell states, “The technical rigor of our program is juxtaposed with a robust University approach to Christian liberal learning. We aim to produce Christian thinkers who can engage the data science world in ways consistent with a Christian understanding of ethics and personhood.” Currently admitting students into the program, the first Eastern computer science students will begin in August 2018.
