John A. Pearce II

Distinguished Scholar in Residence


Dr. Jack Pearce is the Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Eastern University, where he teaches and mentors doctoral students in the PhD Program in Organizational Leadership. His primary involvement is helping students pursue their research interests. In 2020, Stanford University ranked Dr. Pearce as a "Top 2% Scientist in the World" in an evaluation of the impact of researchers in all scientific fields globally. 

Previously, Professor Pearce held the VSB Endowed Chair in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship at Villanova University. Earlier, he held the Eakin Endowed Chair in Strategic Management at George Mason University and was a State of Virginia Eminent Scholar. Dr. Pearce also taught at Penn State, West Virginia University, and the University of South Carolina. He received a PhD degree in Strategic Management from the Pennsylvania State University. Professor Pearce has been recognized by the International Council for the Exchange of Scholars and foreign governments on three occasions, receiving the Fulbright Senior Professor Award in International Management for work in Malta, the Fulbright U.S. Professional Award for work in Malaysia, and the Specialist Award for work in Canada.  

Professor Pearce is co-author of 44 books, including Global Business Strategies, 2021 (with Cornelis A. DeKluyver) and Strategic Management: Formulation, Implementation, and Control, 14th ed., 2015 (with Richard B. Robinson, Jr.). He has authored or co-authored 135 articles, 50 published business case studies, several practitioner articles, and 137 refereed professional papers. These have been published in journals that include Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Business Horizons, California Management Review, Forbes.com, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Business Venturing, MIT-Sloan Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and 13 law journals. MIT-Sloan Management Review published his landmark article on company mission statements in 1982, and his extensive article on product reconstruction appeared in the Wall Street Journal in 2008.

Dr. Pearce is the recipient of several awards to recognize his graduate and undergraduate teaching, research, scholarship, and professional service accomplishments. He received the Beckhard Prize from the MIT-Sloan Management Review for his innovative work on planned change and organizational development, and the Best Article Award from Business Horizons for his domestic outsourcing research. Sponsors of other awards include the eight business schools, the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies, the Association of Management Consulting Firms, the National Association of Beta Gamma Sigma, and four divisions of the Academy of Management. Professor Pearce has served on 13 editorial boards and as the Advisory Editor for the Random House Series on Management. He is the Editor for the Business Expert Press on two series: Corporate Governance and Strategic Management.

Professor Pearce has served as a principal on research projects funded for more than $2 million. He is a leader of executive development programs, an active management consultant, and an experienced expert witness. In 2008, Dr. Pearce was identified as one of the top contributors to academic thought in the past 25 years; in 2012, he was recognized as one of the top contributors to business practice in the past decade; and in 2014, he ranked 23rd position by Google for all-time contributions to the business literature. Google Scholar reports that Dr. Pearce's scholarship has been cited more than 30,100 times and calculates his career H-index as 61 and i10-index as 119.
